I just put in four bags of eco complete in a 55g., and it is for the most part very fine- sandy. It made my tank very cloudy and I had to turn off and service my filters. Is it okay to not have a source of o2 for a while to let this stuff settle, or should I get a pump and air stone? I don't have any fish in there.

No you definitely don't want to rinse eco-complete. It comes with its own liquid containing beneficial bacteria. It is meant to go in the tank before you fill it with water. You'll be just fine letting the tank settle naturally. It should clear up in a day or two.

I just have to say thank goodness you didn't try that with Flourite! Have you ever wondered what a 55 gallon chocolate malt looks like? :)

I initially ran two filters and they cleared the water pretty good but got clogged with the silt. I have my diatom d1 on my 29g now and will move it to the 55g. tomm.. I probably won't add any fish until tues. I put a couple flakes in and am now just using a air stone for o2.

The eco is not mixed up well, should I maybe siphon about half the water then refill? My heating bill is going to be ridiculous so I've already tried mixing it with my hands and accomplished clouding my tank but not much else. Maybe very fast vacuuming with the water going back in the tank? It's late I guess I'll give it a shot in the morning.

Eco will leave a cloudy tint to the water though not as much as most other substrates. Just run a strong filter with some fine floss and it will clear up in a few hours.

All I can say is I get more impressed with the d1 every time I use it. The clarity it provides is the best of any filter I've tried.
