I bought a little lionhead goldfish for myself back in April. I only had a 12G at the time (I know, I know), and finally I have access to a 29G to which I will be moving "Lambert" as soon as I am able. My questions are:
1) does anyone have a reccomendation for a specific type and size of filter? I've heard good things about the Aquaclear filters in particular. Also, would I just get a filter suited to 30G or should I look into one that is graded for a larger tank (like 50G?). Goldfish are messy, and while I try to do WC every week sometimes my schedule holds me hostage and it might be 10 days to 2 weeks until I can find time to do a WC (going to school fulltime and working almost fulltime eats up alot of my week)
2) do goldfish get lonely? Lambert has been on his own up until now so I think he's okay, but would a buddy greatly improve his quality of life? I will not be able to go larger than 29G so I'm hesitant to add another fish that I won't be able to care for when it gets larger. That being said, I've been told that lionheads don't get too big (Lambert is probably around 5" now) and aren't that active to begin with so I might be able to get away with adding another one to the tank, disregarding the 30G per fish and 10G per each fish thereafter rule.
3) I've read that fancy goldfish are prone to swimbladder issues and a veggie diet might curtail this problem. How exactly do I go about feeding this? Right now all Lambert gets is the Hikari Lionhead goldfish food twice a day, and a couple of peas on Sundays (my betta gets peas too). I've tried feeding zucchini but it gets resoundly ignored. Also, this is a bit of a silly question but HOW MUCH of the goldfish pellets do I give? A teaspoon? A pinch? He grew rather rapidly, and I have no idea how much to feed him now. And with the larger tank I guess I'll be expecting a growth spurt.
Thank you so much for your help. I admit I was rather suprised at how quickly Lambert grew so now I'm scrambling to make him comfortable. I appreciate all suggestions
