I just noticed that my female albino molly has ich on her tail fin, since she is white I have not noticed any on her before now. Today I purchased another female so that my male wouldn't kill her, but I think he has all ready stressed her to this ich thing.

I want to do the warm temp and salt method instead of meds because of the fry. Will the salt hurt them or would I be better off with the meds? (I have the meds already from when I had fish before)

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not a molly expert by any stretch, but many people (not me) reccomend using salt in tanks with molly's. I would imagine that it wouldn't hurt them, especially if you do things slowly. I would elevate the salt 1/4- 1/2 teaspoon per gallon at a time and make sure you mix it well with tank water as it goes in. I usually add my salt to a bucket, add enough tank water to dissolve the salt and then siphon it back into the tank with a 1/4 airline at the filter output letting the flow from the filter further dilute the salt solution . It won't hurt anything to slowly elevate the levels over the course of a day or two. And watch your fish. They will let you know if there is a problem, and a water change can fix it quickly. My experience has been that salt and heat is the least stressfull of all the effective ICH cures, it would stand to reason IMO that it would be the same for the fry.

I have my tank at 78-80 degrees, and about 1 tsp of salt per gallon of water. No problems with ich since I started doing this. I add the salt right to the filter, so it disolves at it's own pace, and goes into the water gradually.

When I do a 10 gallon water change, I add 3 tsp's of salt. Seems to be working for me, the fish seem fine. I have molly's, platy's, tetras, african dwarf frogs, dwarf gourami's, and pleco in there. They all seem fine with it. I even keep a little bit of salt in with my betta, and he's doing fine with it too.

But i'm a novice, so take anything I say with grain of salt (no pun intended, honestly!)

For ICH, I would try 2 tsp. per gallon up to 3 tsp per gallon, and run your temp on up to 86*F

It is also never a bad idea to search for other articles on any subject. These two happen to be two that Have helped me immensely and I find to be very accurate, and well referenced.

Thank you for the help, I would also like to know if I need to remove the carbon from my filter? I forgot to ask that earlier.

I am using the salt and do not see any ich on her tail fin now, I am hoping that with a few more days of treatment that I will have no more worries with ich.

Thanks for the help.

I am concerned that I am stressing one of my female platies with the salt treatment. She is very pregnant and has not moved around in 2 days. She is trying to seclude herself in a corner at the back of the tank. Should I be concerned or is she getting ready to have her babies? I have never seen one of my fish do this before. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
