Ok i got a piece-o-crap canister filter. It was free off craigslist so i figured why not? anyway, i have NEVER owned a canister before, so i am completely clueless as to how to operate it or how they work. It is a Marineland Magnum 350 convertible canister filter (i think 5 or 6 years old) whatever that means. I tried putting turning it on (testing it out with a 5 gallon bucket) but couldn't seem to make it work. It started working once, but then i unplugged it and water started spewing out the sides like it was siphoning the water down out of the bucket. Also it came with a white little cylinder that i assumed went into the middle of the filter, but i won't fit in perfectly, it is kinda tight to get in so i left it out.
Can somebody help me make heads or tales of this? it might just be too old...?

I don't have any canister experience but...

the top o-ring... that can be fixed with a bit of aquarium silicon, just seal er' up or you can buy an o-ring either way...

when i got all 8 of my magnums marineland the maker also included a small tube of SILICONE LUBE. Its not aquarium type silicone sealer but a lube.

wow...lol well that sounds like a lot of work for a filter that might not even work. i think im just gonna chunk it and wait to figure out canister filters until i buy a new one that is guaranteed not to flood my room overnight or anything like that.
but thanks for all of the answers guys
