i have a pleco. In my tank i have a fake log for tanks from the pet store and all my pleco does is stay on the inside of the log. i dont know if he is eating becuase i never see him except when i can see his back when he is on the inside of the log. also when i put in algae tablets the fish eat them and he never comes out..im not sure if he knows they r there.
can i take this log out? or would it be better for him to have that place to stay in.Also what do i do to feed him cucumber?thanks very much cya

pleco food

To feed cucumber cut it into 1/8th inch slices and sink them in the tank. You could use a feeder clip(clip that sinks in the tank that food is clipped to). Or wrap an elastic band around a rock and stick the slice under the elastic.
Keep the log.

Many plecos are nocternal (as was mentioned) so he seems too scared to come out right now. What size tank is it?

ahh the tank is a 25 g(80 cm long).
he is only a baby . three inches long if that. could he be scared of my compressicep cichlids?? the cichlids are only about 1.5-2 inches long and there are 3 of them.

Well, some fish that are nocturnal change while in aquariums, others just don't seem to. Perhaps you should get some tongs and place an algae tab right in the log right before the lights go out. And alternate that with some fresh veggies like zuchinni or cucumber once or twice a week.

Hi

Plecos do mostly come out at night, I'm sure he'll be eatting alright though if you've had him some time. Most plecos graze on algae which natirally grows on most surfaces. Obviously though as most people have suggested trying to feed him additional vegitation is a good idea.

By the way you mentioned that your pleco was 3 inches and you wondered if he was a youngster. Well my pleco is about 12 inches and I've had him a number of years, odds are a 3 inch pleco is probably quite young although i dont know exactly what species yours is. By the way if your pleco does eventually get to full size i.e. 12-14 inches he'll need more than a 25 gallon aquarium.
