I posted on monstertank for some reason. I got a lot of good help, but figure this is probably the better place to finish the conversation. You can see my full setup in the signature, but let me know your thoughts.

I bought my tank petsmart setup in 2000, used it very little and packed it away as I was always on the road. I finally pulled it out of storage last month cleaned it up a lot and set it back up. I have the whisper 60 which should turn over my tank enough. I was using the standard carbon filter setup with a underwater setup and three 1" airstones with a rena 400 three tube setup. I changed to the filter to the Top Fin Bio 3

I have 3" of rock, and a wide variety of live plant. The live plant seems to be doing really well, they are growing nice but i only have the standard aqua glow 30w single bulb setup. I invested 300$ so far in getting the tank back up with rock, plants, fish. And I am in great learning phase. I see that I might later need to change my filter, and I also need to get atleast 2.5w per gallon for the plants. I found a few lights at hellolights but they are 165$. Thats more than i want to spend for now, but i want a good setup.

I have had fun getting this setup and going and enjoy playing with it. I am moving into a bigger place in just over ayear and plan on getting a 100+ tank but for now this is my tank.

Thoughts?

Thanks
Dave

I think you may be able to increase the WPG by using twist tube home use flourescent lights.

Good to know.

Sad this morning I awoke to one of my silvertips dead. He had been swimming round the tank a lot with his mouth open. But none of the other fish seemed to be having issues. Do you think that maybe there is not enough oxygen at the bottom of the tank? I have 4 cory cats that live there but they are so lazy its hard to tell. Or maybe that is what makes them lazy?

I serously doubt it's a lack of oxygen. Usually suffocation is indicated by the fish respirating very quickly or hanging out at the water surface where there is a higher saturation of oxygen.

Sorry, but I don't have any idea what else might have been the cause based on your description. The first thing most anyone will ask you is what your water parameters were. Also, what the fish looked like when you pulled him out. Obviously torn fins or lesions would help indicate a cause of death, but there are other things to look for such as discolorations and swelling.
