My plants dont seem to be doing very well, they are growing pretty good , but within a few days any new leaves seem to start turning yellow or brown and die,,,i give them liqiud ferts and co2 , but still the problems are there. The only plant that is healthy is my java fern ( the others are, watersprite,,,,hygrophila polysperma,,,and another type of hygrphila),,oh yes the lighting is 1 watt per gallon

Ok, you CAN grow plants in less than 1.5 wpg. I have a 12 gallon tank with a 13 watt light. You just have plants, you just have to have the correct plants for the lighting. I have no Ferts, no CO2, no special substrate. I have no problem growing plants.
Plants that should grow in a low light tank with no additives (I have all these):
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)
Java Moss
Cabomba (Cabomba caroliniana)
Moneywort (Bacopa Monnieri)
Anacharis (Egeria densa)
Dwarf Anubias (Anubias Nana)

So don't let anyone tell you, that you can't grow plants in your low light tank. To find other plants that may work in your tank go to www.tropica.com and then go to the advance search. You can tell it what lighting you want and it will give you a list of plants that would work for you.
I hope this helps! Good luck!!

I always thought Cabomba sp. required medium - high lighting and IME never did well in my low light aquariums.
