I am setting u a new tank and Igot some rocks from the river in my backyard. I was wondering what I :help: should do to clean these so they will not pollute the water. :help:

i take nice quartz rocks from my local streams. i just thoroly*sp wash them with a hose at hi power so it gets all those worms off. then let it sit in a tub of water and let it sit in it fully submerged for a day or 2. then it'll be fine :joke:

First off, you need to make sure they are sable and wont mess around with the pH. The first test is to drop some vinegar onto the rock, if it fizzes its out. If it dosent theres one more test. You need to get a bucket of tap water and lit it sit for 24 hours. Then test the pH of it. Then add the rocks. In another 24 hours you should test the water again. If there is a change its not a good idea to use them in the tank because they may mess up the pH. If they pass both tests wash them with a hose and a cloth or something. Pour boliing water or bolling them will also help. Then add them to the tank and enjoy.

I put mine in the dishwasher and just used the rinse cycle, no soap, and then soaked them in a bucket for a few days...or a week cuz I was lazy. :p:

I usually just let rocks dry overnight (if collected from water) and then rinse them once with hot tapwater before putting them in the tank.

I picked up these from the beach; they made a great contrast to the sand substrate:
