Hey, so im deciding to quit the planted tank and restart due to algae and because i cant afford a pressurized tank right now. so i was thinking what can i change my tank into? can you guys help me out with themes? cichlid tank etc. my tank is a 20gal long. what are the requirements for the theme too please. thank you very much.

- also am i allowed to use the same equipment if i was having algae problems (not super serious) like my heater and filter? if i change my tank around?

OMG yes ^^^^ listen to Lupin. I have a Hillstream Loach or a Hong Kong Loach and they are really interesting. I recently got a 305 with spray bar running clockwise on a hex 55g. He really loves it. And on Loaches.com? theres a river tank setup page. Looks really neat.

Do some flat rocks for em to hop around on in the current and some taller plants by the other end and mosses like by the powerheads. It could look really awesome.

And on the poor planted tank idea. What size is the tank? I find DIY very easy and quick. every 2-3 weeks just refill a 2L, hidden outta the way. I marked my 2 cups sugar and 5 cups water on the 2L and I mix the 1.4tsp yeast with 1cup water in the side. It has really nice effects.

I'd do DIY co2 and see what happens to the glass after you, clean it all off, gravel vac once a week with 50% and have a decent plant stock. You should be ok.

Cic's- I dont keep them but I think the number kept would be pretty small in a 20g depending on which species. I know shell dwellers are neat and keep to the bottom and convicts are hardy as well and breed like guppies almost. All you have to do is google those fish names or go to the cichlid forum and start reading, searching previous post's work really well too.

Good Luck. Cant wait to see pics. And my hilly is in my pics in the link below.

seems nice but i want something colorful and i dont want to deal with co2 as i have the hagen co2 system and its horrible the container is small but the ladder is nice. anyways any ideas about african cichlids? how many i can have? what are brightest that are not to big? any sites with nice pictures so i can get an idea of a setup? water perimeters? can i use a 2x18 t5 coralife on the cichlid tank or will it cause algae problems?

-but please give more ideas but something a long that line. nice and simple to look at.

-thank you lupin and ftwaynefish

as far as cichlids:

choose one pair

bolivian ram
blue ram
keyhole
apisto
honduran red point or similar strain

-or-

a small colony of shell dwellers

other than a handful of shellies, there are no african cichlids you could keep. they all get far too large and are too active and territorial for a 20g. actually, i am not sure if the shellies are appropriate, but someone else may know more about them.

if you choose any of the small new world cichlids, you could add a few cories on the bottom and a small school of tetras. that would give you a lot of color.
