I am having a bit of trouble with my angelfish breeding pair. I have been trying to successfully breed them now for over three months. I bought them already paired off and within days they started breeding. The only problem with this is that all the eggs turn white within 24 hours. I have only had one successful spawn from them, so that means they are not infertile. Can anyone please help me. I have tried everything from letting the parents raise them to artificially raising them to no avail. The last time I tried this was last night where once the pair stopped breeding I put them into a seperate bowl heated to the same temperature as the tank, about 82F, dosed with methylene blue and aged dechlorinated water. This morning most of the eggs were still fine, but when I came home today all the eggs turned white as if they all do it at the same time. Altough there are still some that haven't turned white.

Does anyone have any idea of what might be going wrong, it's driving me crazyy!!!! :hypnotized:

I might contact the seller and ask for water parameter specs, then compare mine to that. Try to adjust as necessary(without the use of brand name chemicals like pHup and down) to achieve a close proximity to that whence they came.

The problem is that I bought these at a swap meet and don't have the contact information of the seller. I am thinking it might be something with my water as well. Anyone know what kind of water would be best?

IDK, but there is always a chance the male is sterile for whatever reason. You do definitely know that both of them aren't laying and the male(?) is attempting to fertilize them as they lay? Water wise I have had luck in the past with 76-80 F and a slightly acidic pH. Have had no problems with hardness of the water I have had. Hope you find the answer and good luck.

Yes I did have a successful spawn when almost ALL survived and only a handful turned white. This is why it is so confusing because he does do his job, but is it possible that maybe he doesn't fertilize them always? This is so mind boggling!

Many years ago in my college days, I had some marbles who were somewhat lazy in attending to their eggs. Ended up setting up another tank next to them and the neighbors seemed to increase their parenting. Maybe that or a separation period might help. May try a diet change or something else ie, lighting, water change, temperature, etc. Hopefully someone better able than me can chime in and help. Good luck.

The one thing I didn't see you mention in your original post was airation. When you pulled the egg's, did you have some type of airation flowing up over the egg's, too similate the female fanning the egg's. I would also try another type of anti fungal. I have used Methylene Blue in the past with minimal success. When you had the one successful spawn, did the parents take care of the eggs and fry or did you artifically raise them. You also mentioned that you aquired this pair at an auction, it is my opinion that most proven pairs I find at auctions are either past their prime or they don't produce the results that the previous owner was looking for. Hope this helps.
