I have had my aquarium for over 5 months now and all has been fine with my fish. I recently bought 2 new catfish one panda and one bronze, everything appeared fine untill one of my shrimps changed colour and died. This morning i woke up to find the panda catfish had died and the cherry barb i have has lost colour and cant swim propely i have had him in quarintine for 4 days but still no change. The chlorine in my tank is far too high, this is the first time that i have had this issue after a water change and cant seem to lower it. Is this the cause of the fish loss or could it be that something has came into the tank with the fish i bought from the shop?

I dont know what to do as im going on holiday tomorrow so i need to fix this problem as i dont weant to leave my house mate looking after a tank that isnt safe.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks

Do a few more water changes, and make sure you dose with water conditioner to remove the chlorine. On the first water change I'd add a little extra to take some of the chlorine out of the main tank. But when things get bad, water changes are your answer.

Chlorine dissipates in a day by itself. How are you testing for chlorine? Are you meaning ammonia?

My guess is it is a strip test...not the most accurate of things but when in doubt, water change.

I would suggest getting a liquid test kit if at all possible. Post readings for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate at the very least.

Even if the chlorine isn't the real issue you should be treating all new water with some sort of conditioner. A water change wont do any good if you are just adding more and more chlorine from your water supply. If you are on city water you need to get one that also works on chloramines because it is a much more stable chemical that does not gas off nearly as quickly as chlorine, which is why most municipal water supplies are treated with it...if you are on a well it would be a good idea to find out what your water is like.

Also, a few more questions just to make sure everything is in order:

What size tank?
What is the full stock?
What is the filtration?
How long has it been setup and how was it cycled?

Every time i do a water change i add conditioner and stress zyme to help with the good bacteria, its the first time that this has happened to me in the 5 months i have had my tank (i do a water change every week) and thats why i wondered if it was more likely that i have got something in the tank from another pet store when i bought the two new catfish. This is the first time of losing any of the fish for me so i am quite suprised as i havent done anything different other than add the fish.

The tank is a 190L i have 1 cherry barb as the other has now died, i have 5 nenons 1 shrimp and 6 catfish. Its been set up for about 6 and a half months i didnt add any fish untill i was sure that it had been cycled and that all water test came back clear. I have an air fliter and a pump. (Not sure what details you want from this one sorry)

A specific "make and model" of the filter would help to make sure your tank is adequately filtered. Also would help to know what conditioner you are using.

Can you give us specific readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate? It doesn't hurt to check.

4 days of QT is not a very long time for potential problems to develop. I suggest waiting for at least 2 weeks...that may have been the issue right there.
