I used to have aquariums 20 some-odd years ago and I don't remember it being this hard.

About two months ago I set up a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium. For 6 - 7 weeks I had no casualties whatsoever and felt confident that the tank was pretty stabilized. Currently it is planted and has been housing 5 neon tetras, 5 glolight tetras, 3 red eye tetras, 2 blood(?) gouramis, 2 blue gouramis, 2 baby gouramis (forgot the name white bodies and red tail and lower fin), two tiger(?) loaches, two rainbowfish, and a male betta. The tank was developing a bit of an algae problem so I added 3 small algae eaters and indulged in two blue rams. This was two weeks ago. The rams died within 3 days, then two of the algae eaters died within a week. The day I was going to my fish store to replace the algae eaters one of my neons died. The next day one of my very small gouramis died. These fish I had in my tank since day one. My replacement algae eaters have died.

When the first fish died I bought some Turbo 700(?) to bring down the nitrates just in case. I lost another neon today. I go to a very good aquarium shop but have kind of exhausted possibilities with them. They don't want me to test the water for awhile, since it is a new setup and just kind of wait it out. But I just hate seeing the fish die, I feel like I'm killing them somehow.

More about the setup. I have undergravel filters. The tank temp is between 80 and 78 degrees. Apartment is hot and cannot bring the temp down right now. I do 5 - 10 gallon partial water changes twice a week. I add treated water at the same room temp. The shop thinks my water changes are good and not too frequent since I'm not replacing too much water.

Otherwise, my fish seem to be healthy. I haven't had white spot since the first week and the medication took care of it. The fish that are dying, are eating and swimming about in the morning and are loach food by the afternoon.

Sorry for the lengthy post but wanted to give you as much detail as possible. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
Mary.

I don't understand why the LFS doesn't want you to test your water unless they're just interested in selling you more fish. The first thing I'd do is a complete range of tests (ie, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and a Ph). Seems to me you need to eliminate any possible problem with the water first? Algae problems can be an indicator of bad water. Have you done any water changes since setting up the tank?

Also, for now and especially until you get the test kits, avoid adding anymore chemicals to the water, except for dechlor. when you do water changes. The temp. is fine. I would do at least a 25% water change for now. If you have to, you can have the LFS test the water, just ask them for exact numbers from the results. "good" and "in range" are not good enough :D !!!

You need a test kit. Don't listen to what the store is saying. Get one ASAP, so we can get some information here.

Also you can not do "to many water changes". I can do 100% 50% water changes in one day without any bad effects.

Thank both of the previous posters for responding. I'll get a test kit tonight. I almost bought one over the weekend, but I kept on thinking of the fish shop telling me to not worry about the water for awhile and let the tank finish cycling. The first six weeks of having the tank I was bringing samples in to them which they will do for free for their customers, and they finally told me not to worry about it for awhile and not to add too many new fish. Which I haven't.

Thanks for your advice. I just want to be a good fish mom and really don't want to have any casualties except from old age if I can help it. Something I'm not sure if the people at the fish shop really get.

I'll post again tomorrow.
Mary.

It is possible to let the tank finish cycling, and do water changes too, which will keep your fish alive!! Maybe they're just sick of you coming in all the time with water samples!!! LOL

Yes, I do a couple of water changes a week. Between 5 and 10 gallons each. Before using the Turbo Start 700 I did a 50% water change per the shop's instructions. I agree that they were probably tired of my bringing in water samples weekly, but they have also discouraged me from buying test kits and were telling me to bring in the water... So, what does one do?

I agree youneed to test yur water asap. However do think it could be a silent disease that you got form the algae eaters and/or blue rams?? Lets look at all the possibilities. This could very well be the problem because your fish were fine until you introduced these new fish.
