Here's a good 'stupid' question...

Is feeding SW fish different from feeding FW fish? 'Cause I fed FW fish with flakes for approx 4 years, and occasionally stuck some tubifex worms to the side of the tank, and now I have no idea how to distribute chow (mysis shrimp, herbivore mixes, etc..) to the soon-to-be new residents of my SW tank. Do ya just drop it in there and let 'em pick it out of the column? Do ya turn of the powerheads while they eat? Do ya have to poke 'em with a special feeding-stick? I thought I better ask before I get any new fish and starve them to death.



(and actually, I suppose that's actually 4 stupid questions, not -A- stupid question, but you get the idea.)

First off, there isn't a stupid question.

Second, though some people prefer to turn powerheads off (which can be advantageous instead of spreading it everywhere), I just leave everything on and carefully gauge the food added. I melt the frozen cubes in a cup of tank water and slowly add the contents, watching to make sure it is consumed each time it is added. Sometimes I will rinse the food to get some excess juices, films, etc. off. I don't have a high sump turnover rate, so most of the food stays in the tank, anyway.

So, really, there are many ways to skin a... well... fish. It doesn't particularly matter as long as the fish get fed.

I thaw some out and slowly add to the tanks making sure everyone gets food and the sand bed does not. I keep seaweed on a clip, and I feed a few different types of food. I try to rotate between emerald, flakes, myisis, brine on occasion. I have a serpent star i spot feed a couple of times a week just to make sure he is getting some food. After keeping fw fish for much of my life, I really dont find it that much different. dont overfeed, and give them some variety.
 
Do saltwater fish really need salt in the water? (stupid question test) ;)
