Hermit crab problem

do you make any effort to specifically FEED your hermits?

they sound like they're starving

I do give the crabs food when I feed my coral and they still go after it. I only have 9 crabs and they alway seam to have enough food. I think I'll try that algae disk idea. I would like to get rid of my crabs as a last resort. They do a good clean up job!

what kind of hermits are they? like blue or red legged?

They dont have either. I talked to my fish guy today. He has the same crabs and they do the same thing. Right now I have the feeding dome over my coral and put an algae disk in the tank and the crabs are not paying any attention to the coral. So far so good.

I don't know exactly how to break this to you but, not very many species of hermits are reef safe. Heck, most of them aren't even fish safe as far as an enclosed box and a large hungry crab goes. I would really try my best to get an id or at least a close id on them or you might grow to hate them.

I'll ask my fish guy what kind they are. The crabs didnt pay any attention to my coral last night because I put an algae disk in the tank. I think I'll do that for a little while and see if that helps. Is there a type of crab that would be ok and not attack my coral when fed?

It's give and take with inverts. Sometimes even the most reef friendly varieties will have non-reef friendly individuals.

Yours just sound mean!

:)

Ya I'm thinking they are just litter buggers :)

Yeah, I had problems with all my blue legs. No matter how much I fed them they still caused trouble. I took all of mine back to the LFS except for one. I thought less competition for food and homes would stop the agressive behavior. He was still a bully. I punished him by letting him be my test invert for my new tank  (after the tank cycled of course, I am not that evil xD). Sadly he is doing well :wall:

So far I have nothing negative to say about my dwarf zebra hermits (except they sometimes mess up frag placements). I got them after I took my blues back. They stay pretty small and do their jobs. Great for nanos.
