Hermit crab ?

I am having a hard time deciding how humid to keep my tank. When I keep it high the crabs seam to have a much better color. But the food molds quickly because they don't eat as much. When I keep it lower the craps color fades and they burrow but they seam to eat more. I can't seam to find a happy medium. Does anyone have any ideas?
 
Hermit crabs need pretty high humidity. They can dry out pretty easily and that's why you're seeing them dig into the substrate. Try making a mixture of sand and Eco Earth for a substrate. Spray it once of twice a day and they should do fine. Food is going to mold no matter what. You're just going to have to change it everyday and maybe not add so much this time.
 
I agree with VF. The amount of food that hermits eat is very tiny, you need to feed smaller portions and change it daily. The humidity needs to remain high so that can breathe, if their gills dry out it means death.

i found that keeping a towel lightly draped over the cover of my hermit crab tank allowed for air to exchange but kept the warmth and moisture in. i didn't have any kind of lamps or heaters or anything, though, so don't know how much that may or may not help you, depending on your set up.
 
How warm are you keeping the crabs? Many people are unaware that they need to be kept in the high 70's to low 80's. Room temperature isn't enough.
