My 10g VERY heavily plantedDwarf puffer tank is a near flop. The only male I have left is currently in solitary confinement for life for the serial rape and murder of 5 female puffers. I am getting out of the puffer business. I am having no luck with them. Besides if i buy and bring back any more puffers petsmart might rethink thier return policies. :)

Although it will probably be years until the male dies, I am planning what to do with this nice heavily planted tank. Not that I want to really get rid of him. Very interesting fish. Enjoys watching me browse the internet. I even download some pictures of nice women for him (female DPs) :). He gets excited over that. Its just that a lone puffer isn't very visually exciting.

I am thinking of a nice pretty centerpiece male betta with a colony of some livebearer.

I really interested in Heterandria formosa (least killifish) but I have no idea where I can get some.
 
I am so sorry to hear about the murder of your harem! ..well i had to have my local lfs order my killies! i love them though and they are extremley interesting! and a planted ten is what i have them in! they love it! and they do reproduce like rabbits and rais etheir own young quite well, this has easily become the bets live bearer tank i have ! good luck on your search for the holy kilie! lol :dive2:
 
How do you all feel about keeping a betta with the killi's? i just read that they are extremely shy and might hide and not breed if placed with other species.

If not, what would go good with a betta in a 10g?
 
a betta could easily eat the males. From descriptions a typical female formosa is just 3/4 of an inch with males being just 1/2 inch. An older female can get as large as an inch, but that takes a while. There are fish that could be kept with formosas, but they might be just as hard to find.
 
a betta would find them to be a good snack! so i would not add any other fish ...i keep corys in with mine ,,and snails as well, will not eat the fry! killies breed well enough that you would fill the tank with them! the one on here whose information pictures and never failing suggestions i would recomend you trying to im maybe would be tricksterpup, he is the reason i got into them!maybe you could do a forums search for threads by him...and you would see his input! as i am still learning,,, good luck to you!

I second judgemax with what to keep them with. least killie are like fish fry size. also you'll need to cover you filter intake, our they'll get sucked into it. I think they are best in a species only tank. don't keep adf's with them either. Or any other livesbearer or they'll eat'em up!

tricksterpup on this forum knows the species well and can offer all the good info you'll find. Also there is a species -thing written by him on the species things on here. sorry hope that made sense.

Ok gender corrections aside.

Tank mates for Hets, A 10 gallon would be a fantastic tank for them and you probably could keep 50 in here very happy. Just make sure you have a sponge filter, so that way no body gets sucked up. The fry are tiny but huge for a fish this size.
A few years ago, I agave a trio of hets and endlers to a friend of mine who kept them together in a small tank. Both species are doing well together and breeding very nicely for her. So if you can get a nice pure strain endler, go with those. Another fish I recommend are Dwarf Cories, but if you cant, I believe some green cats would be fine. Another critter I recommend are Amano or Cherry shrimp. These small shrimp live a long time and are fun to watch along with the dwarf livebearers.
others could be Apple snails if you would care to have snails as well. But mind you, I prefer to keep mine in species only tanks and they do very well. Very hardy little fish if you give them every thing they need.

Actually, I am still working on that article. It has been a busy summer with work and going places. I am hoping to get it done by fall. I promised it to Orion Girl and I keep my promises. I also hope to post pictures of my own stock in the article.

But another fish I do recommend but only to the experienced keepers. These fish are really hard to keep and require live foods is the Pygmy Killie Fish (Leptolucania ommata). I did not have much luck with these guys but they are tiny beautiful fish that are native to the same grounds as the Dwarf livebearer.

Hmm. no power filters? And i just bought a new aquaclear. Are they much smaller than a dwarf puffer? I have a semi fine netting (1/8"?)that I put over all my intakes. It seems to keep swordtail fry in one piece working on my 3rd batch ..THIS SUMMER. THis batch is going to come from one born somewhere around the end of may. Must be happy in there.

My brother just bought into the hobby with 2 female and 1 male guppy/endler cross (bright yellow body with an iridescent hint of the endler pattern on side) last week. 24 hrs later he had 19 babies with one female to go. would these be ok in a het tank? or are guppies more agressive.

which reminds me ...
"ALL I WANT ARE SOME FRIKIN GUPPIES WITH FRIKIN LASER POINTERS ON THIER HEADS".
