Hexagon build thread

yea I thought they sounded weird too, but then the manufacturer sent me these specs.

* Source Material:InGaN !
* Emitting Colour:10mm 40° 5-Chips WHITE LED
* LENS Type:Water clear
* Color Temperature: 8000K
* Luminous Intensity-MCD: Min: 260,000mcd Max: 280,000 mcd
* Reverse Voltage:5.0 V
* DC Forward Voltage: Typical: 3.0 V Max: 3.8V
* DC Forward Current:100mA
* Viewing Angle:40 degree

Items Symbol Absolute maximum Rating Unit
Power Dissipation PD 500 mW
Forward Current(DC) IF 100 mA
Peak Forward Current* IFP 150 mA
Reverse Voltage VR 5 V
Operation Temperature Topr -40~85 ℃
Storage Temperature Tstg -10~100 ℃
Lead Soldering Temperature Tsol Max.260°C for 5 sec Max. (3mm from the base of the epoxy bulb)

*Pulse width≦0.1msec duty≦1/10

Items Symbol Condition Min. Typ. Max. Unit
Forward Dissipation VF IF=100mA 3.0 / 3.8 V
Reverse Current(DC) IR VR=5V / / 10 uA
Dominant Wavelength X IF=100mA 0.3 / 0.34 /
Y IF=100mA 0.3 / 0.34 /
Luminous Intensity IV IF=100mA / 265,000 280,000 mcd
50% Power Angle △θ IF=100mA 35 / 45 deg

I then put 280,000 mcd at 40 degrees into a lumen calculator my school uses, and it gave me 106 lumens. I like the luxeon/cree led's but I want to keep heat to a min. If you want, I can send you a few if you wanna check them out. I'm going to work on hooking one up today to 3.3 volts to see how much light it puts out.

Again thanks for the help!!

Thanks for the comments too!

Yeah, sounds like that china made junk where the specs have been greatly exaggerated. And in order to verify, I would need a lux meter, something I don't have.

PAR may be a little better than the 5mm, so it might grow something. I'm just worried about the life of the die. 1-3 watters have heatsinks to pull heat away, anything less doesn't so I suspect the life aint gonna be that great. Maybe 15K-20K hours.

well th back of these led's have larger flat tabs to help with the heat, that and I was going to use a computer fan or two to flow air, so I"ll see how they perform. If it's not enought I'll pick up some luxeon/cree and use those instead.

Thanks for the input!

I was talking to one of my friends about the leds, and he suggested me making a mineral oil cooling solution. If I could make a hood that is perfectly sealed, i could fill it with mineral oil to cool the led's. They put a cooling device at one end to pull heat from the oil, and that should keep the led's nice and cool. However I'm not a huge fan of mineral oil on top of a shirmp colony. I'll probably look into some form of cooling solution to keep these things cooler, since after an hour, they are EXTREMELY hot to the touch, nothing that will cause any fires, or burns, but enough to make you drop it if you touch it lol. Worse case I'll just drop the whole LED thing all together for now, since I don't have the cash for the high power luxeon/cree and everything else I need for the tank. I might just make up a couple of CFL reflectors and go from there, only time will tell.

I ordered drift wood for the tank (thanks manzitadude) that will be in this week. Then it's just eco-complete black sand, and filters. WAAHHHOOO allmost there!!!
