Another 3-year-old story -
I got my son a 10 gallon 18 months ago since he was really fascinated with aquariums. He was thrilled about choosing his "own fishies" at the store (from a pre-approved list!), although he had a hard time with not getting many of them at once. Also, a few died, and that was not easy.
Needless to say - he was never expected to take care of anything
and except for feeding ocassionally, never did.
He lost interest after a few months, doesn't care about it much, although I'm hooked, and upgrading to a larger tank now.
So, unless there's a grown up at your household who's willing to do the work, it's probably not the greatest idea.
