hey everyone, my name is liz. I just got a 10g tank for Christmas and put 2 little starter fish in there today. When i was at the pet store i fell in love with the little fire eels, they were no longer than my ring finger. I have been doing research and noticed that they can get fairly large, but i asked the lady at the store and she said that one would stay pretty small and would do just fine in my 10g tank. Is this correct?? I would hate to buy one then it gets to be huge haha. Thanks in advance for any advice :thm:

Hello Liz. Not a big eel fan myself, and never kept many, but I do know fire eels can get large and that they will outgrow a 10 gallon tank in no time. The idea that fish will only grow to the size of the tank is a myth. Her comment "one would stay pretty small and would do just fine in (my) 10g tank" concerns me: either she doesn't know her stock or she is more concerned with a sale. I'd suggest posting your question in the General Freshwater or Bottom Dwellers section for info from somebody who has more experience with eels.

Welcome to AC.

Yes...I agree with Wyomingite...sounds like they're just trying to make a sale no matter what. I'm glad you're doing your research:thm: before you buy. A lot of people don't and it's the poor fish who suffer. Good job and :welcome:to the forum :headbang2:
