I was glancing at your linked pics and saw your mole shrimp, who also appears on your icon. I was curious about them. How hard they are to locate/buy, feeding, size, agression, etc. I'm thinking about starting up another small planted tank and some freshwater inverts would be a change from all my fish only tanks. So any advice you've gleaned from raising that guy would be greatly appreciated.

Well I saw the first one at the LFS and decided I liked it, but it was kind of expensive so I passed on it and some one else bought it. A few weeks later they got in a pair of smaller ones that were less expensive, so I bought one. I haven't seen another one since, and I’ve been checking because I would like a male female pair.

I did a ton of searching on the net for info, but found very little. Their scientific name is Atyopsis gabonensis and other common name is Cameroon Armored Shrimp, their temperature range is about 70 – 80* F, and they can get up to 6” long. I have hard water (well water) and he seems to do fine in it.

He spends almost all of his time sitting in the current with his mitts open feeding. I feed him a mix of powdered fish flake and brine shrimp. He doesn’t catch much of it so the excess food led to a large pond snail population, but I don’t mind because I can just feed the extra snails to my loaches.

If the fish or frogs get too friendly with him he will stomp on them/stab at them with his front legs, which have a spike on them, but I don’t think he could actually hurt the other fish.

Well that’s about all I have, hope that helps.

I'm looking also, so if anyone finds them please share. They used to list them on Aquariumstuffers.com but haven't recently, I keep checking.

I finally found another one!! *does happy dance* :dance :dance :dance

I went to trade in my common pleco today at the LFS where I obtained the first shrimp and they had another one.

I'm pretty shrue that it is a female also, the first one I obtained had very large front walking legs, and this one's walking legs are all the same size.

They had the 1 mole shrimp and a Flower Shrimp that was brown camo colored.

I can't wait to put them together and see how they react to each other.
