Hello, I'm the not new to fish keeping, but I'm still learning.
I currently have a 48"x12x18 freshwater (if you can call it that) tank.
I have a nice big pleco and also a small one.
What a great start, I don't know they're names.
4 black widows (skirts) tetras
2 platies ( m&f)
1 sterbai cory
1 otto
When I originally started I had guppies. I was delighted when they bred.
My bronze cory also laid some eggs. I found one when doing a water change, but it died while transfering it from the bucket.
I also had black mollies, they really bred. I moved them to their own tank, but I noticed after a few rounds they were more skinny (and evil looking). They died off eventually.
I had a sailfin pleco for a few years. What a beautiful fish. I'll try get some photos up. It was like a real life dinosaur with its fins extended.
I only recently lost my main female platy, she was a beauty. I only have two remaining as mentioned. The male has that skinny look like the mollies had. He has filled out slightly and is happyily chasing the female and mooching around the tank. I had him earmarked for dying, but he proved me wrong.
One of my black widow tetras is a few years old now. It has a long dorsal fin and a jagged shape to its anal fin. The other black widow tetras were given to my by my friend with the pleco. At first they weren't too keen on the original black widow but they all shoal together now. They seem to work as a group while looking for food.
I think the pleco is a common pleco. It's light brown with a pale appearance compared to the boldness of the sailfin. It has grown a good few inches since I received it.
I have the otto a while now too, still small though. I must look for a mate for it.
My sterbai cory is the only one left. I had 3 three line cories who have since passed. It has proved hard to find any more sterbai's. It's a lovely catfish with it's golden pecs.
The small catfish is very shy, I have to look up its name/type.
All this has occurred over several years in case your getting worried.
I'm hoping to get some cichlids which would better suit my water conditions.
I'm using Tetra test 5 in 1 test strips.
Its hard to read some results as the colour for KH doesn't match the chart clearly.
My last results were:
NO3: 50-100 mg/l
NO2: 0 mg/l
GH : >16deg d
KH : 15-20 deg d (hard to read green result against chart)
pH : 8-8.4
Unfortunately I bought a pair of kribensis. They are amazing as I read. I was gutted to find them dead 3 days (female) and 4 days (male) after getting them. My red tailed black shark was also dead. I had this since it was a juvenile. It was like a death in the family.
So two partial water changes later this is where I am.
I have artificial plants. I did originally have java fern, which grew rapidly so I put it in the other tank with the mollies. I've just got a clump of it left. the tank sprung a leak so I had to drain it.
:jaw-dropping: I wrote that much ?
