My 1st time here, and i have some questions? This is my first 55 gallon tank, and its kickin my butt! I am having problems with this algae bloom! The water stays cloudy, i have been told to take out a third of the water once a week for three weeks and it should clear up! the ammonia is a little high, but the nitrates are off the chart! I did as the pet shop said and its still cloudy! I have a basic 60 gallon filter system, could my problem be that i need a stronger or better filter? i'm lost and i am losing fish, please HELP!

Algae blooms are most easily controlled by cutting down the light the tank receives but you have bigger problems. Having any ammonia 3 weeks in is proof of that. Since you're new you haven't been told that adjectives have no place in a serious discussion about water parameters. Until now! What are the actual numbers from the tests you mentioned, plus pH and nitrite?
