Hi,
I am new and I need some info. about red claw crabs. I recently purchased a red claw crab and I was looking for info about care and aquarium setup. If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I looked for info. and am not really finding much about them. They are interesting and I would like to keep mine in good health. My children would be crushed if something were to happen to the critter. I would be also.
I have it in a 5 gallon tank with brackish water. It's all alone. I have a heater and a filter running in the tank. It keeps climbing up the side and perches near the filter. What can be used to keep it from climbing out of the tank? What can be added as a tank mate? Or is it best to keep it by itself? I feed it bottom feeder pellets, shrimp and spirulina pellets, frozen brine shrimp, and flake food.
It looks like it is getting ready to molt and it looks like it might of laid egg cases. What do I do now? It stays above the water line nearly all the time. How long does a complete molt take? what do i do to make this a less stressful time for the crab? Do i try to feed it as usual? It does not go down to the bottom of the tank to feed. Is that normal behavior?

Thank you for anyone who can answer my questions and give me some more info.

Well, I have a little advice. He or she needs a nice piece of driftwood, preferably with some java moss or some other type of semi aquatic plants to hide in. You should keep it away from the sides of the tank or he will climb out. They like to spend time out of the water and they need some regular water also. I am looking for a good lonk for you that I found that helped me out alot. The guy is really nice and if you email him he will answer your questions. 5 gallons is pretty small to put another one in without running into territory conflicts. They need at least 12 x 12 area to call their own or they start fighting and that is not a pretty sight.

Here is his web site. http://www.shrimpcrabsandcrayfish.co.uk/
