Hi, need advice with ym Angels..

Ok so, I have these 6 angelfish in a 46 gallon tank that i got from my dad. They seem to be doing well, one pair had 2 spawning attempts, but all the babies were eaten. There are also, 2 red fin sharks, 2 bloodfin tetras, 5 rummynose tetras, 1 iridescent shark and a clown face something. the dimensions of this tank are about 36x12x24, the angels seem to appraciate the vertical space. I have just purchased a 75 gallon perfecto aquarium to better accomodate them, the dimensions are 40,18x21. Do you think the angelfish will have trouble adjusting to the more shallow depths? I heard somewhere that angels have trouble in tanks younger than a few months? what is the best way to catch angelfish? i will also move the rummynose tetras, one redfin shark, and iridescent shark into the 75 gallon along with some others.:help:

Catch them with a net just like any other fish. Their fins will fold down, so don't worry too much about damaging them.

There is no truth to them having trouble adjust to the depth of the tank.

As with any fish, new tank syndrome is a killer. It's not just angelfish. I would suggest you run the filters you want to put on the 75 on the smaller tank for a couple weeks first. You'll have an instantly cycled tank when you move the filters over to the 75.

Another possibility would be to move everything from the smaller tank to the 75. Give the smaller tank a good cleaning and set it back up then move the fish from the 75 that you want in the smaller tank.

some fish from the 46 will be staying in there, and i have have 2 gouramies in another tank that i will add to it after the changes have been made. do you mean take the used filter pads out of the filer and put them in the new filter? i will need this fluval 104 to remain in this tank, im gonan get an undergravel filter for the 75. i am planning on setting up the 75 gallon and get it stable and planted, then adding the tetras, making it a gradual progression.
 
really? well thanks for the warning then, i guess i could see how catastrophic a failure would be, what owuld be a good filter?

that is just not true

there are many who use ugf with no issses..I have rfugs and ugf's with powerheads..with no issues..both tanks have been running for years with no issues..i recently cleaned one(had to move it due to installing a new floor. out of curiosity i broke the tank down completely..and inspected the ugf..guess what...no mulm build up and this tank ran with rfug for two years.

you do need to maintain the tank weel ie do your vac's but neither is a timebomb.

if you don't like ugf that's fine but you should explain your 'hypothesis'.

a correctly setup and maintained ugf is as good as you can get for bio filtration..

in terms of the new tank..as mentioned run the new tanks filter on the old tank and as mentioned
instant cycle.. you can even transfer some live media to the new tank either with substrate or filter squeezins

I've cycled many tanks with both methods with no real issues.

No...run your new filter (along with the old filter) on the old tank for a couple of weeks so it will develop a bacteria colony of it's own, then move it with the fish onto the new tank. You don't need to remove any media from the old filter.

I'd also suggest against the under gravel filter, but others can probably give you better specific suggestions for your 75.

a ugf can be fine in an unplanted tank (in ap lanted tank the roots grow into it and reduce water flow). they can work just fine if you maintain them correctly, but the problem is that not a lot of people do the correct maintenance to keep the ugf clean and safe. they get such a bad rap because of people who don't do the work and then have problems down the road. they think that because it's down in the gravel it doesn't need anything done to it.
 
i think im gonan go with a fluval 204 for the 75. So I need to take the new filter and run it in my 45 for a few days, then run it in the new tank?
