As for the pleco, I have read that they like to hide. Does he have any other tank mates? Any other plecos to keep him company?

Most plecos come out at feeding time and at night. If you want to see them, you can put a red light in the hood for night use (they can't see red light so it won't bother them) or use a flashlight with red tape over the lens.

Pretty much night creatures, though some species can be seen out and about anytime or when they are hungry.
