Hi all!

I have a 29g with 10 neon tetras. All they do is hide! They even have a favorite spot, around a plant in the back corner of the tank.

The tank is planted and there are a few rocks that form crude caves. Plants are mostly in back and rocks on the sides. There is a lot of open area in the middle, plenty to swim.

They do come out to eat as soon as they see food. They hang around for a few minutes after its gone but then return to their 'favorite' spot.

There are about 5 ghost shrimp and a mystery snail with them and thats all.

The water params are all neg but for nitrate 5ppm. Weekly 25% water changes.

Any ideas? Rarely I see then just swimming around... but as I approach the tank they hide immediately. Maybe they need more time to feel safe?

Firstly, how long has your tank been setup? How long have your neons been in the tank? If they've only just been introduced, they may feel a little insecure. Give them some time.

What is the temperature of your tank? I find neons do better when it's a little bit warmer at least 78 degrees F. When it's in the lower 70s, neons tend to slow down a bit.

If your neons are swimming around when you're not nearby, and they are eating normally at feeding time, I wouldn't worry too much about them unless they are showing signs of distress, or disease.

Mre,I recently purchased 5 red minor tetras, and 1 blue mystery snail. When I first introduced them to the tank, they made a beeline to the back right corner of my 35 gal tank. This was Thursday, and now they all swim about without a care in the world.Somtimes they school, but now that they feel more @ home, they swim alone or in 2's or three. Occasionaly there will be 1 "chill'n" in the corner, but as soon as the others enter the area,he swims out and that 1 takes his place. So on that note,I would'nt worry too much. Hope that helps!!!!

Thanks for all your replies!

Yesterday I put in 8 glowlight tetras. Initially they hid with the others (grr). But this morning when I put the lights on all the tetras together were "sleeping" out in the open! Right now they are hanging out in the open together. I guess they needed more tankmates to feel safer.

i know my neons were very active in my 20 gallon, but when i moved them to the 55 gallon, they i guess freaked out over having too much room, and disapeared for a week or 2, they've been out ever since
