I have about a dozen fish in a 700+ gallon pond. They are all doing well except for my molly, which is in the process of spazzing out. I did a pH test and it's very pink (like an 8.0 or greater). How do I lower my pH drastically, safely?
Any drastic pH changes are bad. My ponds run about 8.5 to 9.0 pH when there is little rain. Mollies, which can acclimate to seawater are the last fish that should be having problems. I would leave the pH alone, fiddling with it is usually counterproductive. Remove the molly to a hospital tank for observation/treatment as I suspect it may have a problem of some other sort.
Is this an outdoor pond or indoor 'pond'? Mollies really shouldn't be outdoors, not in most locations and not under many conditions that ponders face. Does this pond have pond fish, like goldfish or perhaps koi?
Anyway, no, I wouldn't lower the ponds pH. This is bad, just as it is bad (risky) to do so in an aquarium.
The list of fish is in my signature. I pulled all the fish into a hospital tank to track them, they are all doing great now, so I should re-release them shortly.
The molly is fairly large, about 3 inches long, and it has a rather significant tear in its tail, which could explain its odd activity.
As an update, I have decided to leave the pH pretty much as it is... no fish have died of natural causes lately, and they are all pretty much interacting well, with the exception of my CAE, which tears around chasing fish like it's on fire. :mad2
