For my 10 gallon, I've got the standard 15 watt 18" flourescent bulb. Can I get anything higher wattage? I assume it'd be expensive, just wondering if it's out there. Thanks!

if you put a higher watt bulb in the fixture it may burn the ballast up or it wont last long, youll have to get a different fixture to get more lighting

Hm, good to know. Where would I look for a better fixture, or entire hood even?

yes i used the screw in 10g hoods for awhile with the spiral bulbs inside. i used the 15 watt bulbs in mine. some peope use the 26 watt bulbs in them but im scared they will burn and they wont last long being crammed in such a tight hood.
2 15watt bulbs should be fine in it for low and some medium light plants. if you add diy co2 youll get good results

You could get an AHsupply retrofit kit for your hood.
Get the 36watt kit shown here: http://www.ahsupply.com/36-55w.htm

Or if you are interested, I can sell you a custom 65watt 6500K CFL light I am currently using on my 10gal (I'm upgrading tanks, so I need to upgrade the lighting too)

Sigh. Due to unforseen circumstances I ended up replacing my 29 with a new tank that also needs better lighting. (See my cracked tank disaster thread). So since the plants in there tend more toward medium light, they're the highest priority right now, the 10 will have to wait. But if I can pull of the DIy custom to the 36, I think I can do something similar with CFLs on the 10. thanks for the offer though, I wish I could take you up on it!
