I'm looking for some suggestions - I've had an aquarium running since November and it has been relatively stable except for one thing...I've had two Highfin Cardinals die. I'd like to replace them with a fish that has similar community characteristics (i.e., temperament), but will be more hardy. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Aquaria Central! You will find wealths of info here! Can you describe your set up as Highfin (Bangaii) Cardinals are generally really hardy. What did the other two die of? A similar probably slightly more hardy Cardinal is the PJ but they don't look too similar. Describe your set up and maybe we can figure out what the trouble you are having with them is! Anyway hope this helps and good luck!

Setup

Thank you for the response. I have a 55 gal. tank that has been running since November. Fish were slowly (i.e., few every couple of weeks) introduced in December. The tank has a substrate of sand and crushed coral, live rock (approx. 1/3 of the tank is filled w/live rock), 2 powerheads, and a protein skimmer (Red Sea, Prizm). The salinity is between 1.022 and 1.023 and the temp. is 76 degrees. I typically do a 5% water change every other week. The following have been in the tank since December and all appears to be stable: 1 snail, 1 hermit crab, 2 sea anemones, 5 blue/green chromis and 1 clown. I had 2 snails flip over and died and I am assuming that a 3rd snail did the same, but I haven't been able to locate it and remove it.

I'm not sure why the cardinals died. One did not seem to acclimate well to the tank and died after only a couple of days without ever eating. The other cardinal appeared to be doing well before dying after approximately 3 weeks. It may be important to note that the second cardinal appeared to be less well after I did a water change and wiping down the algae in the tank. While cleaning the tank he went near the bottom and stayed in one spot. After the cleaning he seemed less response and never ate again. He died only a couple of days later - may have been coincidence (?).

After replacing the cardinals, I'd like to eventually put in a yellow tang and a coral beauty angle fish. I have been going slowly because I don't want to overstock the tank.

Any/all assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks again!
