I currently feed my South American cichlids a mixture of some regular sinking Hikari Gold pellets and carnivore pellets with occasional krill.

However, I am currently starting up an African cichlid tank and I was told by someone at my LFS that Spectrum was the best food he'd recommend for the Africans.

In everyones experience, is Spectrum really better than Hikari Gold for African Cichlids? Or even for all cichlids (South American too)?

As far as between those two brands (and Omega as well) I would use what is most readily and cheaply available. They're all superior mass-produced foods.

For my Peacocks, I alternate between NLS and Hikari Cichlid Gold as staples. Of those two, I like NLS the least because the pellets are small and sink fairly quickly, so a larger amount gets wasted. It's hard to say what they prefer since they'll eagerly eat anything, but they'll jump the surface for those Tetra Color Crisps. That could be just because they're brightly colored and used as more of a "treat" than a staple though.

Most high quality food is high quality.

I am an ingredient reader when it comes to my food, dog food and fish food.I use NLS Cichlid for my africans and also feed to SA Cichlids and other types.... Omega One and HBH are 2 of my other favorites but most producers have quality foods out there if you read labels and look for all natural lists.

For me it's a simple matter of economics. Hikari isn't sold in 5lb buckets like NLS, and I have 12 heavily stocked tanks of cichlids and pleco's (that all do very well on a staple diet of NLS) to feed.
