Hillstream tank

Well thought I update this thread.

The sewellia bred and had a bunch of babies. They're growing into juvie size (thread in loach section). I plan to upgrade their tank to a 40g so that the fry can grow as it seems like the juvies are eating the eggs as there has been a lot of breeding from the parents but not as many fry showing up these past weeks. Have to buy a new light fixture, build a stand, add/buy more sand, plants, and rocks.

A fellow fish hobbyist/friend is offering me some loaches. A trade for some of my sewellias. All he said was they are rare loaches and stay small. Going to find out what they are first before I commit to anything and if they are as rare as he says :).

A lot of upgrades before I leave which may have to be postpone as I'm short one class for graduation. There's a limit on only 16 units (5 classes) a semester now. I need to take 6 classes to graduate. Enrolled in 5 classes this coming up fall semester but that ONE last class :(. Going to cost me an extra $3000 just to take it spring 2013. I could use that on tank upgrades :) which will not happen unless I work more hours.

Very cool!
I'm sure this is wishful thinking but if you are lucky enough maybe he has some protomyzon pachichylus. I'd jump all over that deal if that was the case!

Yea, I won't find out until he's back from vacation. I don't really want to add anymore fish to the tank but if it is something rare, I might want to! I just hope it's something that will like my high current tank and not eat the sewellia offspring.

Unfortunately, I've found that the only thing that doesn't eat my sewellia eggs/fry are gastros and other sewellia.

Yep. Those gastros love algae and hate the meaty foods, from my experience. I think my juvie sewellias are eating some eggs as their parents breed at least twice a week but I rarely see any fry now since they started growing .5" and bigger. I tried adding more rocks but haven't seen any difference yet. I have around 20 juvies with the parents.

New "rare" loaches could be cool (or not, lol)! But having to go an extra term to graduate is not. Is this going to wreck you work overseas work plan? What a PITA!

Yep. When I met with a counselor, she didn't tell me about this. Plus the email they sent out said that students had to wait until August 2nd to enroll in more classes. Then I found out 5 classes is the maximum for the semester. I'll have to re-apply sometime in late fall/early spring 2013 for the abroad plan/job. Either that, internship here for two years, or get my masters, which I do not want to do yet.

My friend is on vacation so I have no idea what fish he has. Have to wait a few weeks to find out once he is back in Ca. All he said was it, being a loach that was around 2.5 inches. Something rare :).

Well thought I update:

Going to be getting my new tank sometime next week when I get paid. I went last week to check out some prices on tanks at my LFS and was very tempted to get a 90g than a 120g but they're very expensive. The 90g tank itself was $280 and the 120g $380. Not in my price range. I am either getting a 40g breeder, long, or 45g. Price was around $100 for the tank so I expect to spend around $300 for the tank and stand. If I do decide to get a 40g breeder, I'll spend less than $200 which is what I want to spend. My local Petco did not have any 40g breeders for the sale so I have to get it at the original price. I hope to also set up the tank next week but not too sure yet as I haven't looked at the new work schedule. I had planned to have a stand built but my dad was offered more money and promoted at his old job so won't have time to build anything right now until winter. I can't build anything so have to buy the stand.

Sold off more than half the sewellia offspring. Received 3 stiphodons which kind of ruined my tank plans. Trimmed out some ferns and vals.

Also need to get a egg crate for the gobies as they've been digging under the rocks. Don't want them to get smashed.

I'll have another update once I have set up the new tank :)

Went to go pickup the tank but they were out of stock. Told me to call or go back this Friday as they will get in the tank by Thursday night. I'm going to pickup some sand and a glass cover for the tank tomorrow as I'll be getting the tank on Friday, paint the back black, and let it dry until Monday when I am not working. I just hope I have time to set it up as I am going back to school on the 20th for my last year :) of college. My co-worker/friend is picking up the last sewellia juveniles then I'll just have the gobies, adult sewellias, and whatever my friend wants to trade with. I just need a egg eater so that I won't have any more juvenile sewellias as I will not have time to really care or ship out fish this year. Still a lot of breeding from the male and his females but haven't seen fry so at least I know the juveniles are eating the eggs. They go crazy when the parents breed. Also, the last female finally bred with the male so I have a total of 4 proven females and 1 male. The male was a little rough with her though as it looked like she did not know how to 'hook' fins with the male.

Here's a photo of a juvenile sewellia plus one of the female RCS:

After a month, new tank has grown plenty of new algae. I added some anubias plants to help the females get away from the male sewellia. Have about 4 or so extra anubias and vals just floating in the tank as there is no room to put them in the tank. Added 2 gastromyzon ocellatus and 1 zebrinus (not too sure on the id). Pretty much stocked the tank so I hope I don't get anymore 'presents'. Saw some baby sewellia. Starting to have some color but not big enough to see without really searching for them in the tank. I'm still deciding if I want to change the Aquatop into a Eheim as I do not like the Aquatop as of right now. Been really busy with school so finally had some time today for a few photos:
