Ok, getting excited now.

I haven't kept fish for 15 years and now my 96l is just about Cycled.

I have over 60 plants in it, Ug filter, Fluval internal....

Slightly Alkaline Water.

Now plan to SLOWLY introduce fish...hears where I wat to be in 12 Months:

  • 3 Guppies
  • 3 Platies
  • 6 Cories
  • 6 Neons
  • 6 Lemon Tetras
  • 2 Dwarf Gouramis
  • 4 ADFs
  • 6 Shrimp, maybe Ghost or Cherry
  • An algae eater (suggestions please)
Looking for suggestions so hit me with it.

The BOSS (Wife) is insistent al the nice wee fishies will not fight with each other or get too big for the tank!

Looking for something a bit different as well - hit me with it!

Have thought about

  • some sort of Catfish
  • Glass Catfish
  • Scissortails
  • more terta
Lookign for views?

I think it is a bit much for a 96L tanks. The guppies will more than likely overstock you in time, even if the others eat some of the fry.

I'd drop the ADFs, and neons, and platies.

Only one dwarf gourami.

If you want glass catfish you're most likley going to need to put them in a school of 3 or more + they get around 4in. Any kind of algea eater that doesn't get to big would do fine.

Dwarf Gouramis get VERY territorial (just search Dwarf Gouramis threads and you'll see a commonality stating this very issue). The larger of the two will no doubt harass the smaller of the two with most typically fatal end results. Some people have kept two and have been ok however, more often then not, there is a major territorial problem.
Anyway, I really like Siamese Algae Eaters. Quite efficient at eating all kinds of algae and very passive. They are diligent workers and great community fish.

If you want to keep one male and one female dwarf gourami that is ok, you just want to avoid keeping two males.

Oops, I forgot to accentuate that important tid-bit. I think I didn't mention that because rarely to LFS around me ever even stock females.

Actually you would probably be best with 1 male and 3 dwarf females.

I agree that the stocking is a bit on the heavy side. Personally I would stick to one variety of tetra and get as large a school as you can. You see much better activity that way. The cories are catfish (you added that to your list of maybes) and are really the only good option in a smaller tank. Onmce again the larger the school the better.

Also before you start adding fish, I would seriously do a search for RUGF or reverse undergravel filter. A much better option, IMO.

3 Guppies < you'll have 3^6 before long

3 Platies ok

6 Cories ok (go w/ a dwarf species)
6 Neons ok (get fat, healthy brightly colored ones or keep looking, maybe get ~10 as they stay small)

6 Lemon Tetras (may get too large/aggressive for neons, get 3-4)

2 Dwarf Gouramis (suggest just 1, reasons cited already)

4 ADFs (these may eat juvenile shrimp, not as good in very deep tanks)

6 Shrimp, maybe Ghost or Cherry (cherrys require very good water, add last)

An algae eater (suggestions please) Otocinclus cats (3-6) or a pair of SAEs (if you can find them). No CAEs.

additional/different
ADF already covers "different"
a microrasbora species (harlequins) or maybe some pristella tetras - both school nicely, stay pretty small, have some interesting markings.
