I saw Hjalmars fin a few days ago looking really thick as though there where a white foam around it. After I caught him the foamy stuff fell off but his fins are really frayed. I can't see any other problem with him, no redness, no scale problems, just his tail fin. Any help appreaciated.

You might want to try Stress Coat, because this almost sounds like a slime problem, or it could be fungus related. I don't know exactly what you should do, but if you do use stress coat and this condition resolves then it was likely a slime related issue. But as for fungus, you may have to look at a different remedy, you could ask around some fish stores that are reputable. They might be able to advise you as to what to do for your koi. Good luck with getting him better. ~Angela

Stress Coat is money poorly spent....

Fin rot,... bacterial and most likely the 'stuff' that came off was fungus (SAP). Removing this koi to a 'hospital tank' (100gals or so) in nice clean, warm(74F to 78F), well aerated water with salt (slowly risen to 0.3%) will help aid the koi to heal. If no improvement is noticed in one weeks time(nice white tissue regrowth) lower the salt level to 0.1% and treat with a formalin/malachite green med (Rid-ICH or Quick Qure or ProformC) following the dosing directions to-the-letter and increase aeration through out treatment.

You could do the reverse... if you so choose.

While all this is going on put on your detective cap and figure out what has gone wrong in your pond system to allow this to happen... water, it's all about the water.
