Hi,
I just scored a whole bunch of red devils about 10 cm and there too small for my big tank does anyone or has anyone ever oput them in a dam before, its filled with lots of guppies/minnoiws and tadpoles and is not too big so i couldnt drag it to get them back, anyoen think this is a good idea?

I'm guessing that you are describing a dammed stream outside?

Two problems:

First, would the temperature and water conditions be appropriate for these fish?

If so, and you choose to place them outdoors, you them come across the second problem: the risk and danger of releasing non-native species into your local natural environment.

All in all, probably a bad idea all around.

YuccaPatrol makes two good points. Related to the second, however, is the issue of releasing non-native DISEASES into a wild environment with no natural resistance. The parasites and diseases that tropical fish carry can devastate local populations. With a dam and fish, it sounds as if the pond you are talking about has links through flowing water to other water systems. If that is true, then the effects could wind up being quite widespread.

So no, this is a very bad idea.

Note: HOWEVER, for an artificial pond that is completely self-contained, in an environment that is suitable for the fish and that can be dragged to remove them, pond growing can be a great way to raise spectacular fish.

Hi,
thanks for your response but no there is no absolute way that these fish can spread as this dam isnt connected to any water supplys except a summer stream and even that doesnt flow into anything, the dam water is fairly healthy and has no other fish except guppies in it, but even with this would it be a bad idea?

P.s the fish that are in there have all been introduced by myself as a source of food for my cichlids.

Hmm,
Apparently its not illegal to introduce into my own dam, but it is into a public water supply, which it is not.

Famous last words...right up their with, "Don't worry General Custer...I think they're friendly Indidans". Relaeasing any Cichlid into a dam is highly irresponsible. What would happen if the dam overflowed or flooded? Don't do it, man. If only just to set a good example for some idiot who might notch it up a bit and drop some of THEIR fish into a lake. Sounds crazy, but some folk are as good as sheep.

Hey,
Ok i wont, but like i keep telling everyone...... the dams in the middle of the bush and even it it flooded it wont go anywhere and the dam walls are built up high, The fish cannot go anywhere at all, its practiacally just a big fishpond.
