I'm planning to have plants, driftwood, sandy substrate and peaceful shoaling fish in a 40gb tank. Dimensions are 36"L x 18"W x 16"H. I'm considering the water movement and I want it to be a gentle flow into the tank so small fish can swim and be calm and not have to fight a strong current in a single area.
Would it be a good idea to run 2 smallish hang on back filters (1 on each side) as opposed to 1 larger hob filter?

The only filters I'm familiar with from the past are the HOT Magnum, Marineland Emperor 400, and the Penguin filters.
What's currently a good, reliable brand of filter that isn't too expensive?

Thank you!

Look for the AquaClear brand. They're the best HOB filters out there from my experience, quiet, easy cleaning/maintenance, and lasts a long time (still using mine after 3 years!) Amazon is having a great deal on them right now, AC 50's for just 25$ :)

I'd probably get the AquaClear 70 for under $40 from Amazon.com - they are by far the easiest filters to maintain, they can be completely disassembled for a thorough clean and have few parts to them, so less to go back together wrong, break or get dirty. I hate the Emperors and HOT Magnums and all their fiddly parts, personally.

If you get the best HOB filter on the market (Aquaclear) I would get the 110 if it will fit.

AC70 or 110 would be my suggestion as well, if your worried about flow which shouldn't be a problem with either of those 2 AC50's would work as well. I do kind of like running 2 filters on tanks myself so you always have one loaded up with beneficial bacteria.

All of the above suggestions regarding AquaClear HOB's are very good.
You want gentle flow, but good filtration, and you have no problem with running 2 filters - then I suggest you get 2 AC 50's for your tank, as Squid mentioned.

My vote is a little different and I like the Marineland penguins. They are very easy 2 cleaned and have only a few parts. One of my fav HOB filters. But hey my other true opinion is for you to get an RENA xp1. They are super pimp and one of the best smaller canisters in my opinion. They are down below and not in the way, easy 2 clean. customizable media brings alot of variablity in what you can do many different combos 2 suit your aquarium needs.

Have you given any thought to canister filters? You could give the SunSun HW-302 a try: 265 GPH, plenty of media room, reliable (I've had mine for... about a year?) and cheap ($50-60 with shipping)!
