HOB Filter Suggestions for 40 Gallon Breeder?

On my 40b planted communty, I run a AC110 and a Fluval 205. I have great water movement and **** near crystal clear water. The 110 is a workhorse in my opinion, can be LOADED with media and still has a good gph.

I'd probably get the AquaClear 70 for under $40 from Amazon.com - they are by far the easiest filters to maintain, they can be completely disassembled for a thorough clean and have few parts to them, so less to go back together wrong, break or get dirty. I hate the Emperors and HOT Magnums and all their fiddly parts, personally.
I have used the aquaclear 70 with the Hagen skimmer on a 40 breeder for yrs and it is a perfect fit

on my 40 breeder, I have an aquaclear 70, an aquaclear 50, and an aquaclear 30. Either of the smaller aquaclears is going to get transferred to a new 20 I'll be setting up very soon. Aquaclears are my favorite for sure.

Again, thank you for all the information everyone.

I've been comparing filters and reading reviews on various retail sites and right now I'm really interested in trying out the new Fluval series of hob's. The models are C2, C3, and C4. Neither of our local chain stores is carrying them yet so I haven't seen one of these filters up close, only online. They are made by Hagen as well, so they should be good filters. My husband wants to stick with our tried and true Marineland filters the HOT Magnum and/or the Emperor.
We'll see!

Have you given any thought to canister filters? You could give the SunSun HW-302 a try: 265 GPH, plenty of media room, reliable (I've had mine for... about a year?) and cheap ($50-60 with shipping)!

I have to agree with JakeJ here. Have you given thought to a decent but inexpensive Canister filter using a spray bar? It would give you a very nice gentle flow. The Aqua-Top (aka SunSun) are a great buy. Go with either the CF300 or the CF400. Cant go wrong.

If your totally sold on HOB then Aquaclear is by far the best around especially for the money. If it were me then Id go with 2 AQ70 filters instead of the 50's. A little more room for media and the flow can be toned down if needed. Ive also seen the Fluval HOB filters from Hagen and to be honest.... Id rather go with the Aquaclear. So much more to buy for the Fluval version, very similar in style and design. BUT alot more $$ and more parts to mess with.
