HOB or canister? for 55g

It is not the MOST attractive thing I agree! LOL However if you work your aquascape you can usually mostly hide your intakes. I have black backgrounds and the sponges are dark grey/black...they don't really stand out anymore than the actual intake does IMO.

Well Here is my horrific work. I mean... yeah there isn't much to say. I do feel the yellow rubber band makes everything pop though. :mad2:

I am TOTALLY digging the yellow rubber band. I am looking for one as we speak!!.. but seriously you may not even need the rubber band. My fits on very loosely, is very easy to pull off. If it works for you, you can tweek it later!

What can I use as a prefilter? Any sponge will do? Or do I tie filter floss?

+1 to everything I've seen about using the 2 AC 70s instead of a single canister, including the issue of the "excess" flow. And if you paid $50 for the AC70, you overpaid.

I just ordered fluval pre filter sponges. Since Fluval and Aqua Clear are both Hagen properties, I think they'll fit on my AC 70. I'll keep you posted here.

You can also buy a smaller AC impeller and replace the it to reduce the flow. A lot of people that turn their AC 70/110 into refugiums do that.

if you can, you should move that rubber band. you don't want that sponge tight around the intake holes for your lift tube if you can avoid it. it can inhibit the flow as the sponge gets old. closing that sponge up above the intake holes and below the intake (or at the very bottom) would be your best bet.

the flow of water going into the filter will help to keep the sponge on without the rubber band.

what i do for pre-filter sponges is just take one of the Aquaclear sponges, cut it down so it's a cube just a bit bigger across than the filter intake, bore a hole 3/4 of the way down the middle that's slightly smaller in diameter than the intake tube (i just rip into the sponge with my finger, it works), and shove it on the end of the intake. never had a sponge fall off the intake this way.

I use fluval pre filter sponges on my all my ac's they fit like they were made for them.
Petsmart has them for under 3 dollars
