Does anyone have any recommendations on a good and relatively cheap HOB overflow? I'm working on setting up a 55 gal with a ~20 gal sump beneath it.

Define cheap? My overflow was bought used and ran about $100 new. A club member gave me a deal on it for 1/3rd of the cost. I've seen decent ones run around $50-$90 in LFSs. Look for ones that are a 2 part box...a section in the front that a U tube runs over the tank top and into the back section and a pipe that drains to your sump. You'll most likely need a gurglebuster on it and they can be DIY for a few dollars to $15 for a purchased one. Then you'll of course need a pump to return the water to the 5ank. The one I bought isn't cheap but I love it, I spent $120 on it (Eheim1260).

I'm just looking for the overflow right now, the sump & associated pumps will come later. I'm not sure what prices on them are, just don't want to buy something expensive that doesn't work very well.

I'd contact my local reef club and ask if any of them are selling a used one. Chances are good someone will be and the other club members will generally chime in of they feel what someone is selling isn't adequate. As I said I got a $100+ one for about $30 this way. If you're wanting new then I'd say have $75-$100 ready. I'd also stay clear of the CPR ones, I've only heard bad things about them.
