HOB refugium

ok, well i changed my fuge up a little bit, i converted to a bigger overall "package" and added a foam insert for mechanical filtration and some bio-balls that i had. I still have the LR rubble in there, now i just need the algae and the lighting?? Does it have to be one of those super strong lights or just anything really works?? lemme know 8)

thanks,
-Jay

Skip the sponge...the fuge is for biological filtration.....the live rock, a few small water pumps and small (20%) water changes per week will do the rest. The sponge would just become a nitrate trap. Use live rock rubble.....more irregular surface area for bacteria and pods to grow. There is some debate about the efficacy of plants in the fuge, especially for such a small tank and fuge set up. Plus, if you don't have plants, you won't need lighting for the fuge.

i agree i was just stating what they have sometimes the sponge in mine gets cleaned weekly and is just for catching plant matter so it doesnt feed into the tank. and the bio balls do do the same as the rocks id really just use live rock its more natural and it provides areas for pods to hide. as for the light a small maybe 5-10 w pc would be best but a floresent can do as well the algae will just grow a bit slower. also white or even a reddish light should be used nor actinic.

i can post a picture of my fuge, but its not much to look at atm. So what do you guys reccomend, get rid of the bio-balls get some algae and lighting and im good?
