HOB refugium

ok, i got it up and running.... what is the main purpose of this btw?

LOL...no reason..

Hehe...it adds more biological filtration, and, if you use plantsin the fuge, it pulls more nutrients away from algae growth, and it is a safe haven for pods to grow and multiply.

refugums are usually meant for lots of things. a true fuge usually consists of a remote aquarium or box connected to the main aquarium and it will have a sort of mud that then has live rock chunks n it and then an algae usually chatomorphia in it. it is then lit 24-7 to help stabilize the ph through the macro algae continuing photosynthesis instead of doing cellular respiration at night like it normally would. then the algae also removes extra nutrients and phosphates. the mud works a a nutrient export and waste sponge. most refugums will also have a section with a sponge and some bio balls for biological and mechanical filtration and good fuges will come with a skimmer as well. they can also act as a refuge for sick or new fish and of coarse serve as a hatchery and breeding spot for pods which get sucked into the main tank for added natural food.

Yeah, I have a simple fuge that I made from an acua clear 70/300. I siliconed a baffle in it to keep the LS from messing up the impellor. It works very well and has been doing a great job on my 20long reef....so far.....

I have LS, LR rubble and caulerpa prolificarasomethingorother in there....

ok, well i have nothing but LR in it right now, as for the mud... anything special??? i do have the bioballs and a sponge, if you think i should throw them in there as well germanman. I will try to get my hands on some sort of macro algae sometime soon, and as for the lighting... what do you reccomend?

ok, couple of questions.... ny specific type of lighting??

my LFS doesnt sell the algae (im beggining to think there not such a great LFS and am searching for others ) if i cant find it what type should i search for on the net??

but the bioballs and sponge in there as well, and if so placed below the LR??

-thanks,
Jay

also, i should add that my current "fuge" (if u wanna call it that lol) seems like it doesnt have a lot of room to store... i have possible canidate with more room... but the shaft that idn "sucks up water" is much longer and would be nearly on the sand of my tank which i think would create a problem...

ok, well i changed my fuge up a little bit, i converted to a bigger overall "package" and added a foam insert for mechanical filtration and some bio-balls that i had. I still have the LR rubble in there, now i just need the algae and the lighting?? Does it have to be one of those super strong lights or just anything really works?? lemme know 8)

thanks,
-Jay

Any light will suffice, theres not much water there so you dont need alot of watts. The lighting can be set 24/7 or reverse of tank lighting. Also just for reference the bioballs and the reef rubble are doing the exact same thing they are just housing bacteria, and possibly copepods, nothing wrong with having them but no huge advantage either.
