HOB suggestion

while I do prefer the AC filters for HOB there are a lot of alternative filters you can use now that do a good job and are less pricey.

many of the old whisper style filters now use different cartridges similar to those used in the penguin and emperor filters. so you can have bio media with no carbon. and you can use filter mats in them as they use clam shells that are reusable.

I am toying with the idea of one of these

since we have seen some issues with stuff floating on the surface. ;)

again.. research your choices.

in many cases you will be fine.

Believe it or not--I had a Whisper 10 on my 5.5g shrimp. But found the flow was too much. I had one of these

on hand (purchased for a different tank but not used) and tried it. It works great in the small tank. I put on the spraybar attachment that comes with it and have it pointed upward to diffuse the force. I also have a pre-filter on the intake and this also slows the force of the water a bit. I haven't had any trouble with it--just don't like the hoses. They are very cheaply made and I replaced them. I did find the o-ring missing so I e-mailed the company and they sent me one ASAP. But when I tried to put it on--the top wouldn't close. I set it up and used it anyway without the o-ring and it does not leak at all. At $20--this is a great price! I paid more the one I have.

Ok, I am going to do a bit more research but keep em coming!

Yes it is, maybe a small school of microrasboras that is it. But I am going for aestheticly pleasing.

Well I am going to be planting plants like HC and Hairgrass and another reason I want an hob is for the flow and aeration. Already got a sponge don't like it much though
