Holes in sailfin pleco's "sail" ?

As it happens, apparently I was too worried too early. I just saw his sail up this morning, and I couldn't even tell where the holes had been! Quick healing

Aie. Ah well, the folly of buying a cute little guy at the petshop... Do you have problems with them being in a tank with other fish when they get that big? How do you tell the boys from the girls? I just call mine a "he" because that's what I've always called him, but don't actually know...
