Well it wouldn't be officially a holiday without our favorite holiday food thread! Please post here what your family favorite treat is at this time of the year, a favorite cookie recipe maybe, or something you look forward to eating when you visit a friend or relatives house.
Cookies and pies and cakes have for some unknown reason never been extremely popular with my sons. Their favorite cake that I make is a nice moist white cake with white icing. That's it! And they rarely get the urge for cookies, if I bake them, they'll sit or I'll eat them! Yikes!
But by overwhelming demand they are always asking if I can make a Poppy Seed Loaf. It is no longer reserved just for Christmas, I do make it a few times throughout the year. I make enough loaves at Christmas time to be able to give one to each friend and family house that I visit. They seem to go out the door as fast as they come out of the oven!
This is the favorite treat that is cooking at my house today and tomorrow...
Poppy Seed Loaf Delight
3 cups flour
2 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/8 cups vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 1/2 Tablespoons poppy seeds
1 1/2 Teaspoons salt
1 1/2 Teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 Teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 Teaspooons almond extract
1 1/2 Teaspoons butter flavor extract
Glaze:
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 Teaspoon butter flavor extract
1/2 Teaspoon almond extract
1/2 Teaspoon vanilla
Combine 1st 11 bread ingredients. Mix well. Pour into 2 greased 9 x 5 loaf pans. Bake at 350F for one hour. Cool 5 minutes (in the pan). Mix glaze ingredients and pour over warm loaves. I usually make an extra half of batch of glaze so there's lots of yummy glaze!! Then I let the pans sit for at least an hour, until they are cool. Wrap them in plastic wrap. You won't have to worry about how long they stay fresh, they won't stay in your kitchen that long! These breads also freeze very well.
