Holy Browser Buster Batman!

Russ, Thanks for updating this thread with the pictures I sent you and everyone for your compliments. These fry are doing amazing, from the minute I received them they have been eating and growing. Russ I have too say you have some amazing offspring and as for the compliments on the pictures, thank you everyone, I just have a digital DSLR that really does all the work. I just get lucky with some of the shots sometimes..

I think the refugium idea is a great idea often overlooked by FW guys. I have seen many who had reef set ups keeping their refugium and just making it a FW fuge by filling it with swords, anubius, and cabomba. The swords and anubius grow ultra fast and can be trimmed frequently becoming another type of nutrient export on top of being nitrate sponges. Plus, if you put it on a reverse light cycle you will keep your pH more stable.

Yes Roger, I cant wait to start putting plants in the refugium, the only reason why I haven't yet is because the tanks only been up for 6 weeks and the fish might still be too small. I worry about losing some of the plants and them giving off ammonia.

Here is some updated pictures of these guys now 5 months after I received them from Russ, he is still giving me Technical support:help:.. Hows that for customer service.. as you can see I'm fighting a little brown algae..

Hey Gus!

Thank you for the kind words :)

Your kaps look great and they look huge!
That is awesome that you are keeping this thread going.
Very glad to see they are all doing well.

Brown algae - I HATE that stuff with a passion!!!!!
I used to be pagued with it.
I did quite a bit of research on it - it is actually a bacteria and not an algae (it feeds on phosphates/silicates).
Do the best you possibly can on removing waste and that will help.
I got finatical on my mainteance routines and limit the sunlight and I have been able to cut it down dramatically in the 265 Frontosa tank (but not eliminate it).

A BN pleco may/may not help. A rubber nose pleco will eat that stuff. Zebra Nerrite snails will clean your tank up quick (make sure you QT them for 30 days in solitary and you should be OK).
They are not know to reproduce in captivity (which is a good thing so you don't get over run).
They are from Africa but not Tanganyika.
Phosphate removers may help a little. Snails & crazy mainteance are your best bets.

Now, my 125 had brown algae too and it has completely dissappeared.
I even have a relaxed mainteance routine on that tank.
The 125 is in the same room as the 265????
Why one tank gets it and another doesn't is a mystery to me.
The 265 is a new tank whereas the 125 is old.
I have heard brown algae effects newer tanks worse.

The stuff cleans off very easy.
Pull your boulders out put them in scalding hot water and the brown algae will turn green???
I brush down my boulders in the 265 once in a while (I use a long handled wire brush).

Take Care,
Russ

Great looking!

I really shouldn't comment as I am obviously biasd.
With that disclaimer out of the way,... I love em Gus.
They are turning into a stunning group.
Excellent color and their bars are so dark - that is Kapampa for you!

Nice altolamps! Do they spread their finnage at feeding time?
Any dominance skirmishes? Refresh me please, how many altos did you get (4)? 2m/2f? Kipili & Muzi.

Love the pics - they are a special treat for me.

Thank you,
Russ

Fish look great i also second a Rubbernose or BN pleco for the Brown diatoms..
