Holy crap, Betta babies!

Well, since last night the babies are still alive and swimming. Papa’s having a heck of time trying to keep em in the nest haha :nilly:

My LFS didn’t have any live baby brine shrimp, so I bought some frozen food that’s really tiny. Forgive me; I can’t remember what it’s called right now but I hope that will hold them until I can get some proper food.

Luckily, like so many others here, I’ve discovered the jackpot known as Craigslist and have whole collection of empty tanks that I could set up in my basement. So I won’t have to have a dozen little cups all with baby bettas over my house. Yeah, I’m sure hubby would've loved that! Hahaha!!! :grinyes:

Just wondering was there a bubble nest or is your bubbler and filter running all the time. Or did you just happen to see a baby betta? Cause with the bubbler and filter running it would ruin any bubble nest that formed at the top. Still kewl though you got betta babies :).

Feed finely crushed flakes, if no brine shrimp.

I keep my filter running, but its a little HOB and I think its broken, actually. It doesn't have very good flow (?)

But most of my floating plants have bunched up in the opposite back corner, by the heater, so the betta managed to build a lovely nest there. The plant stays there pretty well all by itself.

Nice :), cause when I had a male and 3 female bettas, I guess the current was to strong to make a bubble nest in my community tank.

DarryIR - what size was your tank and what kind of filter?

I have a very small filter and you can't change the speed of the flow, but I had a bigger HOB and you could slow it down a bit.

Also, I read that you're supposed to lower the water lever to a few inches. I didn't, becuase I don't know how you'd filter the water being so low, but I'm thinking maybe you could do without the filter? I don't know...

Gah! He’s eating the babies!!

Tell me, what is the point of doing ALL that work - building the nest, enticing the female, defending the nest - just to eat the babies when they pop out?! What, the Brine Shrimp and Blood Worms I feed aren’t’ good enough?! :angryfire:

Ok, sorry for the rant. But seriously, it’s a miracle that any fish survives at all, when the parents that rear them are more inclined to eat them upon birth.

*Betta tip: Remove male AS SOON as babies are free swimming. Or else!

I think there's 3 left. I can't be sure. Every time I go to feed them, they dart about and thats when he gobbles em up.

If there are any left, I'll take him out...otherwise I'll just out the girls back in and start the cycle all over.
