Holy Schnikes it worked....

As some of you may remember I had a cray infected with white worms, and the tank itself was infected with planaria and plant worms. Well I decided to dose the tank with Fenbendazole to kill off the planaria and plant worms, hoping it would maybe take out the white worms on the cray. Well I didn't think this was going to work because it had been almost 2 weeks since I started the dosing and as of 3 days ago he still had some worms (about half) still on him. So today I was gonna get him out to give him a salt bath and I can't find a single worm.... :o

It seems to have worked and not a single loss. no snails loss, no shrimp loss, no fish loss, and best of all no cray loss.

Here was the dosing schedule

55 Gallon tank w/ 2 full grown crays, 5 or 6 Cherry shimp, 20 feeder guppies, live plants, and about 40 snails.

  • Day 1: Started with the recomended dose of .01 grams per 10 gallons No impact at all in 3 days
  • Day 4: Doubled the dose Planairia and plant worms started having issues
  • Day 6: 30% water change 50% of planaria and plant worms dead most are real sluggish. No impact on the worms on the cray.
  • Day 7: Added another 1 gram for a total of 2 grams now at this point minus what was removed from the water change.
  • Day 10: No sign of planaria or plant worms to be found still about 1/2 of the starting # of worms on cray.
  • Day 12: Worms still on the cray
  • Day 13: Worms still on cray but not as active
  • Day 14: Went to get the cray out to go with the salt bath method and I can't find a single worm on the cray.....

So all in all I have to say slow but very effective. I will keep people posted if any of the critters I was going for the kill on resurface.... and tomorrow I will do a 30% water change.

One note make sure you remove your carbon before running this medication.

Here is the original thread on the infection.... http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188919

what sort of snails were in the tank with the cray? I am just curious on its effects on apple snails and nerites. Great info, thanks for posting it up.

I had only Rams, Bladders, Assassins, and MTS in the tanks I dosed. I had removed the nerites due to some reported cases of losses after dosing of nerite snails. I haven't tried my apple snail tank yet but I did introduce an apple into a dosed tank and he seems to be doing fine. I plan on removing 90% of my apples and adding in a nerite or 2 to test this out on the one remaing tank I have that is infected right now it has only Rams, bladders, MTS, apples in it.

So I will let you know in a few days.

Thanks, look forward to hearing the results. If possible, when this is done, I would like to have it written up as an article if you dont' object :)

No prob I plan on writing a full write up once all tanks are dosed and there has been time to make sure all kills are final....

+1 :thm:
This is a great thread to use as ref in case future similar issues arise. Thank you for sharing, I was wondering how your crays were doing.

those worms on the cray are harmless though this is what I have done in the past is use regular tap water and put him in it for a few hours and poof all dead and you have one live crayfish

These were more parasitic and could be harmful from the info I gathered. They did seem to drive the cray nuts he was always trying to scrape them off. I had heard of using low doses of chlorine like what is found in tap water, but if you are not careful it could harm the crays gills. So I was gonna do a salt bath but now that seems like a mute point.

With no losses of wanted critters and a pile of dead unwanted critters and a happier cray, his color has even improved a little and he seems more active. So the point on this experiment was if I could kill all the unwanted pest in one go and it seems to have been a resounding success....

No prob will, it was just something I've done in the past that had few side affects. I haven't lost one yet to that treatment =)

I'm just glad my way worked I was about to get the tweezers and pick the suckers off the poor guy....
