Home depot bulb or lfs bulb?

The way I said that sounded so defensive. Gotta clear my name, yo! haha

Slow growers are, as Byron said, fine in most situations. I suggested fast growers as a way to compete with algae for nutrients and keep it at bay. I think it's simply that people don't understand the purpose of having plants when they fill a tank with all slow growers (which happens all the time). They just can't compete with algae on their own, so they need some help from fast growers to soak up the extra nutrients which algae will take advantage of if given the opportunity.

Algae is kinda like a fat kid sitting at a table with bunch of senior citizens in wheelchairs when it's algae vs. slow growers. Put some doughnuts on the table and the old folks are gonna starve without some basketball players (fast growing plants) around to block the fat kid's view of the doughnuts long enough for everybody to get a fair share before he gets a hold of them. The basketball players and old folks may be pickier than the fat kid when it comes to doughnuts, but they all have to eat or somebody dies. Starve the fat kid!

Well said.:iagree:

Byron, grandma had the leaf zone left over from her tank when I took the plants out, so she said I could take it. Saved me from buying more. In the 75g and 29g its the Flourish Comprehensive Supplement. I don't bother with the root tabs, just to expensive for not a lot of result. In my opinion. As for the shade, if I can find some, would any kind of -wort work? Like I said previously, I don't know what my LFS has currently. Probably going tonight though to see.

The true floating plants I have or have had include Water Sprite (my absolute favourite), Frogbit, Water Lettuce, Salvinia, and of course duckweed. The latter doesn't do much for shade, it is so tiny, but it will rapidly spread. But I would go for one of the others if you can. The first three mentioned are substantial plants with dangling root systems that provide live food for fish and spawning sites for many fish. Salvinia is a nice plant, but quite small.

Some stem plants do well floating. Brazilian Pennywort is one of the best. Left floating, the leaves grow larger and on the surface, while the roots grow down a couple inches from every node along the stem. Wisteria works for some, but not me as my water is too soft.

The above are fine with moderate light.

Zorronet, you are correct, I apologize, I mis-remembered what you said. You said anacharis and I thought anubias. Also, that is the best way I have ever heard algae described. BRAVO!!!! Is cyperus kefri a fast grower? I mean, in a ten, there isn't much I can do with really tall plants. but perhaps that would be a good substitute for a floating plant as it gets fairly tall?

It's all good, bro! I did say anacharis is a pain. I have one stem left in my prop tank if you want me to mail it to you, but it's not worth a postage stamp... LOL! I don't have any experience with cyperus kefri (never heard of it). I have actually wanted to get my hands on some Brazillian Pennywort myself... It's cool looking and very effective as Byron said. I do have some frogbit I could share... it's spreading rapidly across the surface of my propagation tank right now. How's your weather going? Safe for shipping plants yet?

The cyperus keferi is a type of grass thay gets like a foot high and shoots out these cool little, I'm really not sure what to call them, things that look like the chain swords. I just went to my LFS tonight and looked at their plants, they had everything you suggested, and more!!! They also had the pennywort which is GREAT!!! All of the plants are like $4 for a bunch, normally 4 plants in a bunch. I'm not sure what you consider safe for shipping, but it's pretty cold right now and this weekend we are supposedly getting a "blizzard". Very rare for my area of MD.

I think I will go with the pennywort since I did find it. I think they also had the salvinia, so I may put that in whatever tank I don't put the pennywort in. I wish I could have gotten a picture of their discus display tank. It is so beautiful. I wish one of those guys would come to my place and help me make my tank beautiful!!

You are better off with the penny wort. Stay warm! We can trade stuff this summer lol

Probably the best bet. How do you even ship plants?

Plastic bags and a little water just like fish or inverts. Some ship better than others of course. I do it all the time... Do a big trim and share or trade :)

What carrier do you send them by? fedex, ups?

US Postal. I just sent a fair amount to Craw Chief in a USPS Small Flat Rate box. 3 bags: water wisteria, dwarf sag & leopard val, and glossostigma elatanoides. You'd be surprised how much can fit in even the small box for $5.80. Next step up is Medium FR, and it's 4 times the size for $12.35. Insurance and tracking included!

He's supposed to send me a photo of his newly planted tank, so when he does, I'll link you up so you can see just how much we are talking about.

Sounds good. Just got my tax return so I need to fix the exhaust on my car first and then I'm gonna get a bunch of plants and work on trying to get my tanks beautified.
