I'm using GE bulbs from Lowes. They are F40T12, labeled as "sunshine 40" bulbs, 5000k color temp, 2250 lumens.
The bulbs are really bright and I have been noticing much more algae on my glass. I have covered half the lid with a towel to reduce the light, and reduced the light cycle on the timer.
I'm not sure if that helps you any, but I would assume I am getting the full light spectrum in my tank at a fraction of the cost of "aquarium" bulbs.
