I got 2 shop fittings with electronic ballasts and 2 plant tubes for $120 aust and they work well compared to $128 with old type balst at the LFS.

I run shop lights over my open planted tank with no problems. The only ones I have had problems with are the ones with the electronic ballists built into the ends of the fixtures. They died on me within one year. If you get the normal "box" type ballast they work fine. I have one that is overdriven (one ballast per T-8 bulb) over my 75 gallon and all I use is this double fixture and a single 40 watt bulb. I didn't think it would be enough light but I actually had to turn off another double 40 watt fixture to keep algae under control and my plants don't seen to mind at all.
