Hey guys quick question for you surround sound guys.

I bought a system and of course the wire isn't long enough to reach the rear speakers.

It looks like 18 gauge speaker wire as I bought 24 and its thicker then what I bought. I'm pretty sure I can't add the 24 gauge so I'm going to return it and try to find 18 gauge. I did see 14 gauge but if I buy that I'd just not splice it and run it all new.

Its about a 30 ft run to each rear speaker. Can I get away with 18 gauge or do I need to buy 14 gauge. Is it even feasible to use the 24 gauge for the 10 ft or so I'm short?


Meant to add its 6 ohm impedance.

The bigger the number the smaller the gauge.

I havent worked with audio in a long time, but last I remember any break in the wire can lead to static and noise from oxygen oxidizing the bare wire and causing a minor connection loss.

If you can afford it, you should have solid runs from the deck to the speakers.

my thinking is if it's a cheaper system... explore. if you put the money out and care about it use the right gauge wire.

Since you have the wire now, splice it and see if it works, chances are that it will be fine. 24 gauge wire will be fine, especially for the rear speakers.

Eh I went out and bought 14 gauge anyway lol.

I see all types of connection options but not the one I have.

Right now I have a

SD cable box
Blue ray DVD/ surround sound tuner
HDTV

I can only get sound through my dvd player if I hook up audio l/r cables.

I thought the HDMI cable would carry the sound to the tv from the dvd/receiver?

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?


The cable comes into the SD box then to the TV. The audio cables connect the sd box to the dvd and then a hdmi connects the dvd to the tv.
I tried not using the audio cables but didn't get sound from the dvd that way.
Do I need a digital optical audio chord?
